38 U.S.C. § 101(2) provides: The term "veteran" means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.
The 4 types of veterans are:
FEDERALLY PROTECTED VETERANS (which includes disabled veterans, recently separated veterans, campaign badge veterans, and Armed Forces Service Medal veterans).
RETIRED VETERANS
(which includes those who have served at least 20 years and those who are medically retired).
COMBAT VETERANS
(which are individuals who have usually earned a combat action award).
and
WAR VETERANS
(which are individuals who deployed to a war zone).
